Hardware

Dell Latitude E7240( i7-4600U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, 12.5") : I absolutely love this machine because of its form factor. It's small in size and has more than enough computing power for my needs.

Operating System

Windows 10 host with NixOS VM : I use Windows 10 for C#, F# and GameMaker, for everything else I use NixOS(Linux). NixOS is a beast of an OS and I have a lot of positive things to say about it but I'll save them for a future article. All you need to know right now is that with its unique declarative approach to package and configuration management and atomic upgrades and rollbacks, it gets enough things right to deserve your attention. Give it a try if you haven't already.

I run NixOS in a headless VM in VirtualBox and SSH into it by mapping guest port 22 to host port 2222. I use a shared folder and WinSCP to share files between guest and host OS. My configuration.nix is:

# Edit this configuration file to define what should be installed on
# your system. Help is available in the configuration.nix(5) man page
# and in the NixOS manual (accessible by running ‘nixos-help’).
